Data-based services are a central strategic element for mechanical and plant engineering companies. Knowing success principles for data-based services can therefore be an important competitive advantage. Companies that are very successful in the traditional service and product business also offer data-based services successfully and are increasingly expanding their portfolio in this area. These and other findings are results of an industrial consortium benchmarking on the subject of “data-based services” in 2016-2017. The benchmarking was carried out with a consortium of seven industrial companies from different industries at FIR at RWTH Aachen University. With the help of the benchmarking, it was possible to identify five particularly successful successful practice companies in the area of data-based services and to examine what their cross-industry principles of success are. Data that is generated from numerous sources, aggregated across system and company boundaries and analyzed using modern methods of machine learning or artificial intelligence plays a central role for data-based services. The increasing use of data is based above all on the fact that it is now also economically possible to process a large amount of data cost-effectively. Data is used at different strategic levels in companies and passed through numerous development stages. With each stage, the product and service business is supplemented by additional data-based services that address various potential benefits. In particular, manufacturers of traditional capital goods, such as machine tools, can use data-based services not only to reduce internal costs, but also to generate additional sales in the after-sales business.
